CERVICAL CANCER, WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW.

WHERE IS THE CERVIX?
The cervix is the neck of the womb.its actually the lower part of the womb.this structure is present in every reproductive woman.
 CERVICAL CELL CHANGES
The cells in this location sometimes undergo changes and this is what is looked for when we do a cervical smear. The specimen taken is then sent to the lab and checked if it is dysplastic(likely cancerous) or inflammed (likely infection).
SMEAR TESTING
The procedure itself is usually not painful and should be performed on every woman between the ages of 25 to 64.the patient is asked to lie down and with the aid of a cervical brush the cervix is swept about three times in a circular motion and end of the brush detached and sent for histology studies or washed off in saline and sent the washed in liquid to the lab.
WHY EVERY WOMAN SHOULD BE SCREENED
Cervical screening is not a test for diagnosing cervical cancer. it is a test to check the health of the cervix, for many woman the test result show it is fine.but for 1 in 20 women in the united kingdom the test show changes in cells that can be caused by many things.most of these changes will not lead to cancer.cervical cancer can often be prevented.the signs that it may develop can be spotted early on so it can be stopped before it gets started. A large population of those who develop this cancer of the cervix have not been screened properly. so not going for a cervical screening is one of the biggest risk to developing cancer of the cervix.
RISK /PREDISPOSING FACTORS

. first had sex at an early age.
. have had several sexual partners or have a sexual partner who  has had several other  partners.
. take immunosuppressive drugs (for example, after an organ transplant)
PASSED MENOPAUSE?
You will still need to be tested to check the health state of your cervix.if your in doubt ask your doctor for advice especially if
. you have had a hysterectomy(your womb removed)
. are over 65
. have never had sex with a man or a woman
. your not sure if you need to be tested.
HOW OFTEN WILL I BE SCREENED
between the ages of 25 and  49 you should screen every 3yrs and between 50 to 64 you can screen every 5years
CONTRAINDICATIONS
 . Menstruating women
. pregnant women(relative contraindication)
. recent sexual intercourse with spermicides or other chemicals as these affect the cells.(24hrs)
RESULTS
your test results may come back as normal or may be abnormal in which case you may be asked to repeat the test or further investigation done.this does not mean that you have cancer as abnormal cells can be seen in many conditions even in infections. Some abnormal cells can also revert to normal in some cases. If the abnormal cells are of worry to the doctor or nurse she  may ask you to come for a colposcopy to visualize properly and a biopsy done along to test if cancerous cells are present.
CONCLUSION
Its important that every woman should have cervical screening done considering the incidence rate of cancer of the cervix. Its a cancer that can be nipped in the bud if detected early and the screening is just the simplest thing to do. so beautiful ladies and gorgeous women endeavor to have your cervix screened.
